What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a sudden impact or jolt to the head or body, leading to the brain moving rapidly within the skull. This rapid movement causes a temporary disruption in brain function, particularly at the cellular level. The impact triggers the release of neurotransmitters like glutamate, which disrupts communication between neurons and leads to a metabolic imbalance, including reduced blood flow and an energy deficit in the brain. Additionally, there is an increase in potassium inside neurons, further impairing their ability to function. The damage from a concussion is typically microscopic and may not show up on standard imaging techniques like CT scans or MRIs. Concussions can cause a wide range of symptoms, such as headaches, neck pain, dizziness, memory problems, confusion, and sensitivity to light or sound. Physical therapy is a key treatment in helping individuals recover from these symptoms. It plays a central role in managing dizziness, balance issues, neck pain, motor control, and cognitive impairments by guiding patients through targeted exercises to help restore normal brain function. A physical therapist may focus on vestibular rehabilitation to reduce dizziness and balance disturbances, or work on strengthening the neck and core muscles to support overall physical stability. As symptoms improve, patients return to normal activities and regain full function. Without proper rehabilitation, individuals may experience prolonged symptoms or have a higher risk of developing long-term complications, such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

How do we treat concussions?

Treating a concussion requires a careful balance of rest, gradual activity, and guided rehabilitation.  At Integrated Movement and Health, we take a personalized approach to help you safely return to normal life and the activities you love.

Our concussion treatment focuses on:

  • Comprehensive Assessments: We evaluate your symptoms, balance, vision, and neck function to identify the areas affected by the concussion.

  • Symptom Management: We guide you through strategies to reduce headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and sensitivity to light, noise, or motion.

  • Vestibular and Oculomotor Rehabilitation: Targeted exercises to help retrain your balance system, improve eye coordination, and reduce dizziness or motion sensitivity.

  • Neck and Posture Therapy: Gentle, progressive exercises to restore neck mobility and address muscle tension that can contribute to lingering symptoms.

  • Gradual Return to Activity: We create a step-by-step plan to help you safely resume work, school, and/or exercise without worsening symptoms.

With expert guidance and individualized care, most people recover fully from a concussion.  Some require more follow up with other specialists.   Our goal is to help you heal, regain confidence, and return to your life safely and efficiently.

What past patients have to say:

"Dr. Ian Haslam is the best PT for vestibular dizziness.  His knowledge and professionalism really helped me deal with my balance problems."

" I was treated recently by Dr. Haslam after my concussion from basketball which left my neck really tight with some headaches, and I had a lot of difficulty sleeping.  He really took the time to listen to me, performed a thorough assessment, did hands on treatment that helped loosen up my neck, and educated me on exercises to focus on along with strategies on getting back into my normal sleep routine.  When I had questions I was able to reach out to him and he also consulted with a neurologist when i was debating if I needed further follow up. I also saw Dr. Haslam for an ankle injury in which he was extremely helpful in helping me return to full form. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to return to their peak form!"
